At the NH State Council on the Arts, we know you’re busy. We also know that information about the Arts is important to you.

Art Starts are e-news bulletins that bring you timely updates from the NH State Council on the Arts as well as from local, regional and national partners.

Art Starts will only be sent when time-sensitive news is happening. When Art Starts appears in your In Box, you’ll know something important is going on.

The grants, programs, and services of New Hampshire State Council on the Arts are guided careful and considered planning. Every few years a new Arts Plan is developed that outlines a strategy to meet the needs of the community and target our resources effectively. Each plan factors in the voices of the people we serve; the economic, social, and cultural circumstances of the times; and aligns with the resources we have available.

Our 2010-2013 Arts Plan extends the mission, values, guiding principles and goals from our 2005 to 2010 Arts Plan. The objectives and strategies have been revised to reflect our current resources and the current needs of our citizens.

Arts Education Artist Roster Application: September 3

The Council invites inquiries from practicing professional artists in all disciplines, who are experienced in their fields and can make a strong personal commitment to working in an educational setting with students, educators, administrators and parents. Interested artists should contact the Arts Education (AIE) Coordinator for additional information and application package preparation instructions and for assistance in developing their application.

Professional artists who devote a major portion of their time to practicing, performing, and/or teaching an arts discipline and who receive payment for their work in that discipline who meet several specific criteria are eligible to apply for AIE Roster membership.

Conference for Teaching Artists: “The Play is the Thing: The Serious Work of Play”: September 23, 2010

Preregistration is required; early-bird registration (before September 6) is encouraged.

The critical importance of play in learning and human development is increasingly recognized, but we seem to have less and less space and time for it. This conference looks at the ways teaching artists can be leaders in supporting play – and the creativity it inspires – with learners of all ages and in their own lives.

The conference features juggler and MacArthur "Genius Grant" recipient Michael Moschen; Sara Boettrich, Museum Educator, Strong National Museum of Play; and workshops with artist-educators from across New England.

The New England Foundation for the Arts (NEFA) New England States Touring grant deadline: September 1

New England States Touring (NEST) grants provide support to nonprofit organizations based in New England for community-related activities by select New England performing artists from outside of the presenter's state.

NEST artists are performing artists who meet the NEST Artist Requirements on MatchBook.org and may be selected for NEST funding by an eligible applicant. They represent a wide range of disciplines, such as music, dance, opera, musical theater, poetry, writing, storytelling, interdisciplinary work, and folk arts, must be available for public performances, and reside permanently in New England.

NEST grants are awarded quarterly. The September 1 deadline is for projects beginning on or after December 1.

Free information session for NH Poetry Out Loud 2011: September 13, 2010, 4 p.m.

Learn more about Poetry Out Loud, a national program that offers awards, scholarships and opportunities to learn about great poetry through memorization and performance.

Information session is open to high school principals, teachers, parents and students. Representatives from schools of all sizes and from all corners of New Hampshire are invited to attend.

2010 Statewide Arts Education Conference, “Field of Vision”: October 22-24, 2010

The New Hampshire State Council on the Arts' annual Statewide Arts Education Conference, offers professional development for educators and teaching artists. The conference takes place at the AMC Highland Center, Crawford Notch, Bretton Woods.

The conference offers inspiring presentations, workshops, resources and networking opportunities for artists, educators, and community supporters of arts in education. Each year the conference explores a new theme and presents local, regional, and nationally respected leaders in the field of arts education. The theme for the 2010 conference is Field of Vision.
